Budweiser (mostly vegan!)

Stacey,

Thank you for taking the time to write and ask about Budweiser.

Anheuser-Busch beers are brewed around the world using water, yeast, barley malt, hops and cereal grains (such as rice, corn, or sorghum).

None of our Anheuser-Busch brewed beers or other products contain any animal ingredients (such as milk, eggs, etc), or process aids such as isinglass or gelatin, except for Michelob Honey Lager and Michelob Honey Wheat, which use real honey, and Budweiser and Bud Light Chelada, which contain Clamato.

Stacey, thanks again for your interest.  We hope that this information is helpful!

Brooklyn Brewery (vegan except for the brewmaster’s reserve- brooklyn buzz bomb!)

Hello Stacey,

Thank you for contacting the Brooklyn Brewery.

All of our 12 ounce bottles are vegan friendly, and do not use any of the ingredients you have mentioned. Although our website states that our cask conditioned beers use isinglass, this is no longer true. Only our new Brewmaster’s Reserve, the Brooklyn Buzz Bomb, uses honey and is not vegan.

None of our beers are 100% gluten free.

We hope this information is helpful!

Hi:

I am wondering if your beers are vegan.  I do not use any ingredients derived from an animal including gelatin, milk, honey, whey, casein, isinglass, etc. I am interested both in the filtration process and in the ingredients that go into the beer itself. Thank you for your help.

Peak Organic Brewing Co. (Completely vegan!):

Hi Stacey,

Thanks for reaching out!  We really appreciate the interest.

Our beers are vegan.  The most common ingredient that brewers use to preclude them from being vegan is Isinglass, which is a fining agent.  We use a vegan alternative.

Hope that helps!

Be well,

Bell’s Brewery (mostly vegan!):

Dear Stacey:

Thank you for the note; your question is a good one. Larry Bell is traveling & has asked that I respond to you. All of our beers meet the criteria for vegetarian status. Unlike most breweries our size, we do not filter or fine any of our beers. Furthermore, with two exceptions, everything that we package for distribution to bars & stores qualifies not only as vegetarian, but as vegan. Those two exceptions are Hopslam Ale and Eccentric Ale, both of which contain honey. People often wonder about our Special Double Cream Stout, but it does not contain any cream, milk, or milk-derived sugars: the name refers solely to the creamy texture, not an actual ingredient.

Occasionally, we will make other specialty batches for our own bar that may have honey or lactose; just ask any of the bartenders at the Eccentric Café in Kalamazoo & they’ll be happy to answer questions about the specialty taps.

I hope this addresses your concern. Please feel free to contact me again if you have any further questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Gary S. Nicholas

Stoudt’s Brewing Company (mostly vegan):

Stacey,

We only have one beer that would not be considered vegan. That beer is our Maibock, and we use honey during the brewing process. Other than that none of our beers use or have any animal products in them. We do not use finings or isinglass as clarifying agents, and we are filtering using filter sheets made from diatomaceous earth and paper. Hope this helps.

P.S. Our Pils makes some mean baja tacos. (from veganomicon cookbook)

Williamsburg AleWerks (mostly vegan):

Hey Stacey,
You are correct in that the Pumpkin Ale, Coffeehouse Stout, and Cafe’ Royale are not vegan. They contain lactose (milk sugar). We never use Isinglass or any other animal derived products in our beers aside from the previously mentioned. Hope that helps.

Geoff

Hi Geoff:

I am wondering which of your beers are vegan.  I do not use any ingredients derived from an animal including gelatin, milk, honey, whey, casein, isinglass, etc. I am interested both in the filtration process and in the ingredients that go into the beer itself.  I was on the Tuesday tour and had a chance to ask you quickly about which beers are vegan.  I wanted to follow up with you to make sure I remember correctly.  I have a blog with a few friends where we write down everything we consume and I want to make sure I post accurate information. I believe you said that the pumpkin ale, coffeehouse stout and the coffee royale are not vegan, but everything else is.  If possible, can you let me know what makes them not vegan? Also, are all of your other beers vegan including the reserves and the brewmaster’s selections.

Thanks again for your help.  I loved all of the beers I got to taste at the store (the Tavern Ale and Washington’s Porter are my favorite) and I bought a bunch of the ones we didn’t get to taste so I can try them all.

breakfast 2 (8:00-12:00): green tea latte from java green (very sweet), a banana, Trader Joe’s sprouted flourless whole wheat berry bread (not nearly as healthy as it tastes/sounds)

lunch: collard greens and brown rice, edamame

brunch at bread and brew: soy latte and iced tea. mushroom pizza with arugula added and a tofu frittata with home fries (the pizza was great, the frittata wasn’t very good)

dinner (shared with crispen): chipotle vegetarian burrito

snacks: leftovers from bread and brew, horseradish hummus and italian bread from trader joes and kettle salt and vinegar chips

drink: miller high life. i previously confirmed with the company that it’s vegan. in case you forgot here is their response:

Thank you for contacting MillerCoors.

MillerCoors does not use any animal by-products in our brewing process, nor are there any animal sources used in our packaging. Isinglass is not used in our brewing. There are five basic ingredients in all MillerCoors products. These include pure water, malted barley, corn syrup, hops, and yeast. Corn syrup is one of the basic ingredients used in most MillerCoors products as US consumers prefer its taste. Again, we do not use animal derived ingredients in our beer.

We appreciate your interest in our products.

breakfast: banana and an apple. soy latte from illy

lunch at kramerbooks and afterwords cafe: cafe seasonal greens salad with grilled portobella mushroom

dinner at founding farmers: my brother told me that they are making a vegan menu that is supposed to come out soon.  unfortunately, it’s not out yet so they made me something off the menu.  i have been to this restaurant twice and both times it has been disgusting.  their version of vegan food is to put a starch in a ton of oil and throw in some vegetables.  this time around they gave me homemade pasta with asparagus and peas. it was in about 1/2 inch of oil and had no spices.  i felt sick all night after eating this.  hopefully, the food on their vegan menu will be a lot better.  this is some of the worst food i have ever had.

drinks: Stoudts Scarlet Lady (vegan according to barnivore). original blue moon (vegan according to barnivore) with orange slices. I just sent both companies an email to confirm. i will post their responses

lunch at Meiwah: vegetable soup (they promised me they could make it vegan), brown rice with soy sauce and seaweed salad

snack: more grapes (I ate a bunch and then realized that some are moldy…perhaps this is why i haven’t felt well all day)

dinner at Zaytinya: grape leaves, falafel, Piyaz (warm giant beans, kale, oven roasted tomato, garlic), roasted cauliflower, cucumbers (their bread isn’t vegan, but they will give you cucumbers instead), hummus

beer: peak organic nut brown (vegan according to barnivore. i just sent an email to them to confirm. i will post their response when i receive it).

more beer info:

Ithaca Beer Company:

Dear Stacey,

In general, most of our beers can be considered vegan as the ingredients are wheat (includes barley and rye), hops, water, and yeast.  We have a couple beers that incorporate some additional ingredients though, like alpHalpHa, which derives its exceptional flavor from local alfalfa honey.  This is done once a year and very limited in quantity, but you should know that it is processed through the same tanks and fermenters as our vegan-friendly beers.
Also, Apricot Wheat is made with a natural flavor extract, so more research would need to be done to know if the extract contains any animal derived products.
Please check out website for beers we brew.  There is a listing of the malts and hops used, and any additional ingredients that we used to bring out a specific flavor.
Sincerely,
Allison Graffin

Hi Allison:

Thanks for getting back to me.  Is the filtration process vegan?  Since it sounds like most of your beers are vegan, is there a way to get a list of the beers that aren’t vegan? I have looked on the website, but it doesn’t provide me with enough information to decide if a beer is vegan or not vegan.

Thanks,

Stacey

Stacey,

Good question.  Our filtration process uses cellulose filters that do not contain any diatomaceous earth.
Beers that contain animal product:
Excelsior! alpHalpHa (honey)
Excelsior! Eleven (lactose)
Beers that may contain animal product through trace contact:
Excelsior! Brute (aged in oak barrels previously used by winery)
Excelsior! Old Habit (aged in whiskey barrels previously used by a whiskey distillery)
Apricot Wheat (natural extract may not be vegan)
Beers that are made with water, malt, hops and yeast:
CascaZilla
Flower Power
Pale Ale
Nut Brown
Cold Front
Ground Break
Ex! White Gold
Partly Sunny – also contains lemon zest, orange zest, and coriander
Sincerely,

breakfast: Joe’s O’s with soy milk and double stuffed oreo cookies (yes, i know i shouldn’t eat cookies for breakfast, but i was hungry and wanted junk food, so oreo’s seemed like the perfect solution.

snack: more joe’s o’s

lunch from Cafe Green: I am not sure what they call it at the new place, but it was a more expensive version of Revolutionary Chicken from Java Green

dinner: fries from Five Guys

drinks: yuengling black and tan (i realized when writing this post that I have not confirmed yuegling beers are vegan.  barnivore doesn’t say much and i emailed yuengling on 9/8/2009 inquring about this, but they never emailed me back.  i just sent them another email.

I received a response from Dogfish Head about their beers.  Here is their response:

Hey Stacey,

I have had this conversation before with some of our peeps in the lab and we have decided that you would want to stay away from Midas because it has honey in it (bees). But other than that, none come close to any animals. We use diatoms (dead organisms/crushed shells) in our filtration process. Basically when those sea organisms die, their shells call to the bottom of the ocean floor, they are harvested (just the shells) as diatomaceous earth which is used to polish the beer and give it clarity. But that is not considered an animal byproduct and the organisms died on their own, we did not kill them.

Hope that helps!

Cheers!

Do you know if they will serve vegan frozen yogurt? If so, I will be there everyday!

NOTE: I went to the store to get their vegan soft serve and apparently they only have sorbet. I don’t know if their sorbet is vegan. i didn’t bother to ask because i don’t really like sorbet.

stacey- VEGAN FAIL

May 5, 2010 - .

breakfast: coffee (free from work) with soy milk (i brought my own to work); way too many cashews

lunch: leftover garden blend chipotle burrito

snack: Non Pareils from Marvelous Market (thanks Joanna).  These are really good.  If you are ever in DC you should make sure to get them.

WARNING: ….ah wait…the non pareils aren’t vegan. they have confectioner’s glaze.  I forgot that I started eating these before I knew what that was. After I found out what it was, I forgot to check how they make their glaze. ahhhh.  I just emailed the company to find out more information.

another snack: a lot of sunflower seeds and red grapes

dinner: asparagus shiitake risotto (fresh asparagus from the farmers market, dried shiitake mushrooms (re-hydrated obviously), saffron, Rapunzel veggie bouillon (really good), olive oil and Earth Balance.  I know the picture sucks- i used my crappy phone. Everyone vote: crappy pictures or no pictures? I vote for no pictures.  Hopefully, once I unpack Zack’s old camera i can take better pictures

I also fried up silken tofu that had gone slightly bad. shelley and i were going to add it to the risotto, but shelley changed her mind. it definitely didn’t taste right, but i sort of liked it. it tasted like an egg (maybe i’m on to something with eating rotten tofu)

beer: Anchor Summer  (I’ve never had this type of beer before- thanks Shelley) vegan according to Barnivore. I sent the company an email to confirm.

April 30, 2010 - .

breakfast: half a Field Roast sausage; espresso

snacks at the strawberry festival: strawberries; lemon+grape+orange snocone (no animal products in the flavoring, just corn syrup); salt and vinegar popchips (I had avoided these since they list lactic acid, but the popchips representative at the festival said he was certain they were totally vegan, and that the lactic acid must be from a vegetable source. But now I just looked at the website and the answer to the FAQ about veganism is that the original flavor is vegan.. no mention of the salt and vinegar. He might have gotten them mixed up.)

lunch from the place across from Mamoun’s falafel: fava bean pita sandwich with tahini, lettuce, and tomatoes (only $2.50!)

dinner #1 from Chipotle (Manhattan, NY): vegetarian burrito (guacamole, black beans, cilantro rice, corn salsa, tomato salsa, lettuce, flour tortilla)
