beer tasting at Williamsburg AleWerks The brewmaster (Geoff Logan) was there during our tasting so I was able to ask him what is vegan (or rather, what beers are not vegan).  According to the tour they filter their beer with dichotomous earth.  the beers that are not vegan are the pumpkin ale, the coffeehouse stout (lactose) and the coffee royale.  i tasted the wheat ale, drake tail ale (ipa), alewerks tavern (my favorite), washington’s porter (also good), white ale (tastes like blue moon), ironbound ale and springhouse ale (i think).

Thank you for contacting MillerCoors.

MillerCoors does not use any animal by-products in our brewing process, nor are there any animal sources used in our packaging. Isinglass is not used in our brewing. There are five basic ingredients in all MillerCoors products. These include pure water, malted barley, corn syrup, hops, and yeast. Corn syrup is one of the basic ingredients used in most MillerCoors products as US consumers prefer its taste. Again, we do not use animal derived ingredients in our beer.

We appreciate your interest in our products.

Sincerely,

MillerCoors Consumer Affairs Department

I am wondering if your beers are vegan.  I do not use
any ingredients derived from an animal including gelatin, milk, honey, whey,
casein, isinglass, etc. I am interested both in the filtration process and
in the ingredients that go into the beer itself. Thank you for your help

breakfast: banana and an apple. soy latte from illy

lunch at kramerbooks and afterwords cafe: cafe seasonal greens salad with grilled portobella mushroom

dinner at founding farmers: my brother told me that they are making a vegan menu that is supposed to come out soon.  unfortunately, it’s not out yet so they made me something off the menu.  i have been to this restaurant twice and both times it has been disgusting.  their version of vegan food is to put a starch in a ton of oil and throw in some vegetables.  this time around they gave me homemade pasta with asparagus and peas. it was in about 1/2 inch of oil and had no spices.  i felt sick all night after eating this.  hopefully, the food on their vegan menu will be a lot better.  this is some of the worst food i have ever had.

drinks: Stoudts Scarlet Lady (vegan according to barnivore). original blue moon (vegan according to barnivore) with orange slices. I just sent both companies an email to confirm. i will post their responses

breakfast: grapes

lunch at Meiwah: vegetable soup (they promised me they could make it vegan), brown rice with soy sauce and seaweed salad

snack: more grapes (I ate a bunch and then realized that some are moldy…perhaps this is why i haven’t felt well all day)

dinner at Zaytinya: grape leaves, falafel, Piyaz (warm giant beans, kale, oven roasted tomato, garlic), roasted cauliflower, cucumbers (their bread isn’t vegan, but they will give you cucumbers instead), hummus

beer: peak organic nut brown (vegan according to barnivore. i just sent an email to them to confirm. i will post their response when i receive it).

Ithaca Beer Company:

Dear Stacey,

In general, most of our beers can be considered vegan as the ingredients are wheat (includes barley and rye), hops, water, and yeast.  We have a couple beers that incorporate some additional ingredients though, like alpHalpHa, which derives its exceptional flavor from local alfalfa honey.  This is done once a year and very limited in quantity, but you should know that it is processed through the same tanks and fermenters as our vegan-friendly beers.
Also, Apricot Wheat is made with a natural flavor extract, so more research would need to be done to know if the extract contains any animal derived products.
Please check out website for beers we brew.  There is a listing of the malts and hops used, and any additional ingredients that we used to bring out a specific flavor.
Sincerely,
Allison Graffin

Hi Allison:

Thanks for getting back to me.  Is the filtration process vegan?  Since it sounds like most of your beers are vegan, is there a way to get a list of the beers that aren’t vegan? I have looked on the website, but it doesn’t provide me with enough information to decide if a beer is vegan or not vegan.

Thanks,

Stacey

_________________________________________________________

Stacey,

Good question.  Our filtration process uses cellulose filters that do not contain any diatomaceous earth.
Beers that contain animal product:
Excelsior! alpHalpHa (honey)
Excelsior! Eleven (lactose)
Beers that may contain animal product through trace contact:
Excelsior! Brute (aged in oak barrels previously used by winery)
Excelsior! Old Habit (aged in whiskey barrels previously used by a whiskey distillery)
Apricot Wheat (natural extract may not be vegan)
Beers that are made with water, malt, hops and yeast:
CascaZilla
Flower Power
Pale Ale
Nut Brown
Cold Front
Ground Break
Ex! White Gold
Partly Sunny – also contains lemon zest, orange zest, and coriander
Sincerely,
Allison

MAGIC HAT (VEGAN! except for Odd Notion)

Hi Stacey,

Thanks for writing in. Our beers are indeed vegan. We do not use isinglass
for filtering purposes. We use something called diatomaceous earth, which is
essentially fossilized algae. We did make a beer a while back called
Braggot, a variation of which appeared in winter of ’08 as our Odd Notion,
and that was a mead-style ale brewed with honey. We have not since made a
beer with honey, and we don’t have immediate plans to again. Vinyl does
indeed fit into the vegan category. We hope you enjoy it!

Cheers,
The Voice

May 9, 2010 - .

breakfast (if you can call it that): leftover pizza from Redrocks and a banana.  I need to start eating healthy (or at least not eating pizza and okara burgers for breakfast).  I keep using the excuse that because i’ve recently moved i haven’t had time to cook/ shop for food, but i need to stop using that excuse.

snacks picked at the garden: arugula, chives (including the flowers), radish greens (i’m not sure if people really eat these, but i liked them)

snacks when i got home from the garden: chocolate chips, banana and cedar’s lemon zest hummus (it’s gross) with cedar’s “whole wheat” 5 net carb wraps (although I was very skeptical of these wraps- what wrap has 5 net carbs- they were buy one get on free and i couldn’t resist). the wraps taste like the wraps we bought in austin- a lot of gluten.

dinner: vegetable stir fry (frozen peas, fresh asparagus from the farmer’s market, carrots, red onion, pressed garlic, tofu, re-hydrated shiitake mushrooms, sriracha, vegetarian oyster sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, brown rice, leftover white rice. garnished with fresh arugula and chives from the garden.

here’s another crappy picture (this one was actually taken with a camera (a very old one) instead of a cellphone):

post dinner snack: a handful of peanuts (thanks shelley) and some more cedar’s lemon zest hummus and cedar’s wraps

May 8, 2010

stacey

May 8, 2010 - .

breakfast: i don’t have much food in the house, so i resorted to an okara burger with vegenaise and peanuts (thanks shelley)

lunch: chocolate ships

dinner with my brother at Redrocks Pizzeria: mixed green salad with lemon vinaigrette (the server confirmed it was vegan) and the Funghi pizza (mushrooms, fontina they let me substitute another topping for the fontina- i chose more mushrooms, parsley, garlic, cherry tomatoes, added in: vegan cheese. they wouldn’t let me substitute vegan cheese for real cheese) from. Their crust is really good, but the pizza is expensive.

drinks: budweiser (i have received email confirmation from them that their regular budweiser is vegan..see previous post) and dos equis (vegan according to barnivore- because this was posted just 10 months ago, i believe it’s true)

May 7, 2010

breakfast: Joe’s O’s with soy milk and double stuffed oreo cookies (yes, i know i shouldn’t eat cookies for breakfast, but i was hungry and wanted junk food, so oreo’s seemed like the perfect solution.

snack: more joe’s o’s

lunch from Cafe Green: I am not sure what they call it at the new place, but it was a more expensive version of Revolutionary Chicken from Java Green

dinner: fries from Five Guys

drinks: yuengling black and tan (i realized when writing this post that I have not confirmed yuegling beers are vegan.  barnivore doesn’t say much and i emailed yuengling on 9/8/2009 inquring about this, but they never emailed me back.  i just sent them another email.

I received a response from Dogfish Head about their beers.  Here is their response:

Hey Stacey,

I have had this conversation before with some of our peeps in the lab and we have decided that you would want to stay away from Midas because it has honey in it (bees). But other than that, none come close to any animals. We use diatoms (dead organisms/crushed shells) in our filtration process. Basically when those sea organisms die, their shells call to the bottom of the ocean floor, they are harvested (just the shells) as diatomaceous earth which is used to polish the beer and give it clarity. But that is not considered an animal byproduct and the organisms died on their own, we did not kill them.

Hope that helps!

Cheers!

My first post on someone else’s blog: In response to this post on the Prince of Petworth blog about the new frozen yogurt place in Columbia Heights, I wrote:

Do you know if they will serve vegan frozen yogurt? If so, I will be there everyday!

NOTE: I went to the store to get their vegan soft serve and apparently they only have sorbet. I don’t know if their sorbet is vegan. i didn’t bother to ask because i don’t really like sorbet.

breakfast: salty oatmeal

lunch: leftover asparagus shiitake risotto

snacks: almost an entire package of double stuffed oreos, a lot of sunflower seeds

dinner: the last of the asparagus shiitake risotto

drink: magic hat’s new seasonal beer, vinyl, while watching the play “Mikveh,” which was really good.  Magic Hat says their beer is vegan, but they only talk about dairy and meat (not honey).  I emailed them to confirm what ingredients are in their beers. I will post their response, if i receive one.

stacey- VEGAN FAIL

May 5, 2010 - .

breakfast: coffee (free from work) with soy milk (i brought my own to work); way too many cashews

lunch: leftover garden blend chipotle burrito

snack: Non Pareils from Marvelous Market (thanks Joanna).  These are really good.  If you are ever in DC you should make sure to get them.

WARNING: ….ah wait…the non pareils aren’t vegan. they have confectioner’s glaze.  I forgot that I started eating these before I knew what that was. After I found out what it was, I forgot to check how they make their glaze. ahhhh.  I just emailed the company to find out more information.

another snack: a lot of sunflower seeds and red grapes

dinner: asparagus shiitake risotto (fresh asparagus from the farmers market, dried shiitake mushrooms (re-hydrated obviously), saffron, Rapunzel veggie bouillon (really good), olive oil and Earth Balance.  I know the picture sucks- i used my crappy phone. Everyone vote: crappy pictures or no pictures? I vote for no pictures.  Hopefully, once I unpack Zack’s old camera i can take better pictures

I also fried up silken tofu that had gone slightly bad. shelley and i were going to add it to the risotto, but shelley changed her mind. it definitely didn’t taste right, but i sort of liked it. it tasted like an egg (maybe i’m on to something with eating rotten tofu)

beer: Anchor Summer  (I’ve never had this type of beer before- thanks Shelley) vegan according to Barnivore. I sent the company an email to confirm.
