Subject: Question about your beer

Hi:
I am wondering if your beers are vegan. I do not use any ingredients derived from an animal including gelatin, milk, honey, whey, casein, isinglass, etc. I am interested both in the filtration process and in the ingredients that go into the beer itself. I am mostly interested in Bourbon County, but I am curious about your other types as well.  Thank you for your help.

Stacey,

Sorry for so long in replying.

And such an awesome question, with an awesome answer: Yes, they are vegan!

Neither the Yeast Hoist or Monsters contain any animal products.
They are both unfiltered.

Glad that you like the bottle!

Cheers,
Tim

–> CIGAR CITY BEER

Stacey,
We have made beers with honey in the past. Either and Or both have honey and 110K+OT Batch #3 had honey. But the rest of our beers are vegan-I suspect anyway-but I guess it comes down to a philosophical question. Generally we only filter Jai Alai and Maduro. The filter pads we use are coated with diatomaceous earth and here is the philosophical part of being vegan…..is there a statute of limitations?
Diatomaceous Earth is a fine silica composed of the fossilized remains of diatoms (algae). But they are technically “animal” I suppose. We do not use isinglass, gelatin, casein or any other types of clarifying agents as aroma and flavor are more important to us than clarity.
I hope this helps and please let me know what a Vegan’s opinion is on Diatomaceous Earth. My dad is a vegan, but strictly for health reasons so he doesn’t have an opinion on many of these issues. Also Bolita, Guava Grove, Impovisacion, Marshal Zhukov’s, Hunahpu and Winter Warmer are all unfiltered and so are, I can say confidently, based on the information in front of me, vegan. - Show quoted text -

The only thing that does not make the other 5 bottled products we have not vegan is the use of gelatin finings.  This includes the specialty keg releases that we have as well.  Most of the gelatin binds to the particulates and drops out of solution, but we use it so it’s not vegan.  We are currently doing trial runs with the new equipment and so far we have very positive results (and the end result is vegan).

Thank you for your response.  I am glad to hear that Big Bear Black Stout is vegan.  What ingredient(s) make the majority of your beers not vegan?  If possible, please let me know which ones are vegan so that I can drink them.

Thanks

Hello Stacey,

Most of our bottled beers are not currently Vegan.  We do not use any filtration in our products and do not plan to do so.  We just installed some new equipment that will help us eliminate the need for gelatin finings in the near future.  Big Bear Black stout is and has always been vegan.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

–>SCHNEIDER WEISSE

Hi Stacey,

you don´t have to wonder, its true.

Our Beer is only produced with water, barley malt, wheat malt, hops and yeast. It is not filtered because we do a second fermentation in the bottle, therefore the top fermenting yeast is responsible.

But I am not sure weather yeast is included of the vegetarian rules, but I think so, its not an animal or a part of it.
